Srinagar, December 24: The police in the Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir have initiated a rigorous enforcement operation, registering 94 cases under the NDPS Act against 156 individuals in their fight against drug trafficking in the area.
“Srinagar Police has commenced a persistent crackdown on drug trafficking with the objective of addressing the drug problem and dismantling the supporting infrastructure,” stated a police spokesperson.
He reported that from January 1 through December 23, 94 cases related to the NDPS Act have been filed in several police stations throughout the district.
“More than 150 individuals involved in the distribution and trafficking of narcotics and psychotropic substances have been apprehended by Srinagar Police,” the spokesperson added.
He noted that 26 prominent drug traffickers have been detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS Act) in various jails in J-K, including Central Jails in Udhampur, Bhaderwah, Kathua, Kot Balwal, and Jammu, after acquiring official detention orders from the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir.
“These traffickers have been engaged in distributing narcotics among the youth of Srinagar on a concerning scale. They are also linked to multiple NDPS Act cases across different police stations in Srinagar,” he continued.
The spokesperson emphasized that despite facing multiple NDPS Act charges, the accused have not changed their behavior upon receiving bail from the courts.
“They have been openly promoting drug use among the youth in the valley, particularly in Srinagar, through their illicit narcotic networks,” he mentioned.
Furthermore, the spokesperson indicated that the police have seized properties—both movable and immovable—that were acquired by the drug traffickers through the proceeds of illegal drug trafficking, under the provisions of section 68 of the NDPS Act.
Among these, the police have confiscated seven vehicles and seven residential properties that were unlawfully acquired through the narcotics trade.
“The total estimated value of the attached properties amounts to Rs 4.47 crores. Additionally, 23 bank accounts belonging to these drug traffickers have been frozen as part of the NDPS Act investigations,” he added.
