New Delhi, Dec 27: The Union Home Ministry has announced a seven-day period of state mourning across the country to honor the late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away last night. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India.
In a notice to all chief secretaries of states and union territories on Thursday, the ministry confirmed that Singh will receive a state funeral and that there will be no official entertainment during the mourning period.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Government of India announces the death of Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, on December 26, 2024, at AIIMS hospital in New Delhi,” the notice stated.
As a tribute to the esteemed leader, state mourning will be observed nationwide from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025.
Throughout this duration, the national flag will be flown at half-mast in all locations where it is regularly displayed, and no official entertainment events will take place.
Additionally, on the day of the funeral, the national flag will also be at half-mast at Indian embassies and high commissions overseas, according to the home ministry.
Singh, who was instrumental in shaping India’s economic reforms, passed away at the age of 92.
