Jammu and Kashmir, like many regions across the country, is grappling with various political and social challenges. A group of young writers has identified several critical issues that they believe will gain significant attention from authorities in 2025.

Employment

Jammu and Kashmir’s economy largely relies on subsistence agriculture, with limited industrial development, making employment a pressing concern. Recently, the youth have faced rampant unemployment, exacerbated by examination scandals and a lack of job opportunities suited to the growing population. An over-reliance on government employment due to a stagnant private sector has left many young individuals moving out of the region in search of better prospects.

Currently, 333,446 applicants, including graduates, post-graduates, diploma holders, draftsmen, and ITI-trained individuals, are registered at various District Employment and Counseling Centers, highlighting the urgent need for skill development programs tailored to market demands. Fostering entrepreneurship among the youth, along with supportive initiatives, could provide a sustainable solution to unemployment. Harnessing local resources and talents could open up further opportunities within the region, especially for those migrating from Kashmir to Jammu during winter months.

Tourism

Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage, tourism plays a crucial role in the economic development of Jammu and Kashmir. Despite its historical significance, the sector has been severely affected by political unrest and inadequate marketing and infrastructure. Numerous unexplored regions, like Kishtwar, Doda, and Bhaderwah, remain hidden treasures due to poor road connectivity.

There is significant potential for adventure, eco-tourism, and cultural tourism in the region. To capitalize on these opportunities, it is essential to improve infrastructure, including road safety and connectivity, to attract more visitors. Collaborative efforts with international tourism boards could help promote J&K as a global tourism destination. Tourism accounted for 8.47 percent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2022-23, demonstrating its vital role in the local economy.

While the natural beauty of Jammu and Kashmir presents it as an appealing tourist spot, challenges such as environmental conservation and managing the influx of visitors following changes in the region’s special status need to be addressed. Emphasizing responsible tourism practices is critical for sustainable growth in this sector.

Healthcare

Healthcare is fundamentally important for any region, yet Jammu and Kashmir’s medical sector has faced long-standing challenges. Factors such as a shortage of medical staff and deficiencies in the emergency response system contribute to the issues in this area. Urban centers like Srinagar and Jammu have better healthcare facilities, but rural areas suffer from inadequate access to quality doctors and essential medical infrastructure.

Overcrowding remains an issue at major hospitals like the Government Medical College in Jammu, although the establishment of AIIMS is expected to improve the situation. Maternal and child health indicators are alarming, with high rates of anemia and malnutrition. Addressing these disparities necessitates deploying healthcare professionals to rural regions and strengthening primary healthcare systems. Initiatives such as telemedicine could bridge existing gaps, while increasing the number of medical professional seats at institutions like Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) could enhance the supply of trained personnel in the region.

Sports

Jammu and Kashmir has produced exceptional athletes across various sports disciplines. However, the potential remains underutilized due to inadequate infrastructure, coaching facilities, and exposure to national and international competition. The unique geography of the region offers immense opportunities for winter sports, yet this potential is largely untapped. Similarly, traditional sports with cultural significance, such as polo and archery, have not received the recognition they deserve.

The absence of a coherent sports policy and sufficient funding exacerbates the challenges faced by budding athletes. Changing the perception of sports as a viable career in J&K requires providing young talents with platforms to perform and gain recognition. Initiatives like Rehbar-e-Khel are beneficial but need proper implementation and funding to truly support athletes. Moreover, maintaining sports complexes to international standards and securing sponsorship for new talent can help unlock the region’s full athletic potential.

Traffic Management

Traffic management has emerged as a significant issue in Jammu, with increasing congestion throughout the year. The situation worsens during winter when foot traffic surges. Poor road infrastructure, lack of traffic etiquette among users, and the effectiveness of the Traffic Department are the primary contributors to this chaos.

Despite government efforts, traffic management remains a challenging issue, particularly on routes like Amphalla-Bantalab, Jewel-Bohri, and the old city areas. Both the authorities and the public can play roles in improving the situation.

Reviving the Theatrical Movement in J&K

The rich theatrical tradition that once flourished in Jammu and Kashmir is now facing significant challenges. The closure of Abhinav Theatre for renovations and the lack of activities by key cultural institutions have stifled local theatrical engagement. Artists struggle to find platforms for their work, leading to a cultural void.

Restoring this vibrant tradition of theatre is essential for cultural expression and community dialogue. Institutions such as the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages should prioritize reviving theatre through initiatives like regional festivals, regular performances, and artist workshops. Collaborating with external theatre groups can bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the local scene. Moreover, increasing involvement of schools and colleges in theatrical activities can cultivate the next generation of talent.

Theatre is a powerful vehicle for cultural exchange and community building. By revitalizing this art form, we can celebrate the diverse stories of Jammu and Kashmir and ensure future generations can appreciate the impact of live performances. We hope that the concerted efforts of cultural institutions and local artists will lead to a renaissance of theatre in the region, marking 2025 as a pivotal year in its cultural revival.
