NEW DELHI, Jan 5: Travel booking giant OYO has introduced a new check-in policy for its partner hotels, beginning in Meerut, with guidelines set to take effect this year that will disallow check-ins for unmarried couples.
With the updated policy, all couples will need to provide valid proof of their relationship at check-in, even for online bookings. OYO has granted its partner hotels the authority to refuse couple bookings based on their discretion, in keeping with local social norms, as stated by the company.
OYO has instructed its partner hotels in Meerut to implement this directive immediately. According to sources, the company may extend this policy to additional cities based on feedback from the ground.
“In the past, OYO has received input from civil society organizations, particularly in Meerut, requesting measures to tackle this issue. Moreover, residents from several other cities have also appealed for banning check-ins for unmarried couples at OYO properties,” they noted.
Pawas Sharma, Region Head for OYO North India, informed PTI, “OYO is dedicated to maintaining safe and responsible hospitality standards. While we value individual freedoms and personal rights, we also acknowledge our obligation to engage with law enforcement and civil society groups in the local markets where we operate. We will keep evaluating this policy and its effects regularly.”
This initiative is part of OYO’s strategy to reshape outdated perceptions and position itself as a brand committed to providing a secure experience for families, students, business travelers, religious groups, and solo visitors, according to the company.
Moreover, the program aims to foster longer stays and encourage repeat bookings, thereby enhancing customer trust and loyalty.
OYO has initiated nationwide efforts, including joint seminars on safe hospitality with police and hotel partners, blacklisting hotels alleged to be involved in unethical practices, and taking action against unauthorized hotels misusing the OYO name, the company added. (PTI)
