Indore, Feb 11: Pankaj Advani, India’s most accomplished cueist, clinched his 36th national title and 10th men’s snooker championship at the Yashwant Club, showcasing exceptional skill and determination.
After a challenging start, the ONGC employee triumphed over Brijesh Damani, who managed to win the opening frame, the only one he claimed throughout the final.
This tournament is the sole selection event for both the Asian and World Championships.
Advani demonstrated remarkable consistency and precision; after initially trailing, he steadied his play and controlled the game, leaving scant opportunities for his opponent. In the final frame, Advani executed an impressive 84 break, ultimately claiming the frame, match, and championship.
“With this being the only event determining our delegates for international tournaments, the stakes were considerable,” Advani remarked.
The high-pressure tournament proved to be a pivotal moment for Advani.
In the initial stages, he faced his only loss of the tournament at the hands of Damani, managing just a single frame. The rivalry took an unexpected turn in the finals, where Advani turned the tables, conceding merely one frame throughout the match.
A significant moment during this 91st edition of the National Championships occurred in the round of 48.
Finding himself down 4-2, which nearly ended his run in the tournament, the multiple-time world champion mounted a remarkable comeback, winning the match 5-4. This resilient performance not only salvaged his tournament hopes but also set a foundation for the success ahead.
“The confidence I gained from bouncing back in the round of 48 sparked a belief that something great was on the horizon. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to represent India once more in both billiards and snooker,” Advani expressed.
As the Asian Snooker Championship is set to begin on February 15, both Advani and Damani are poised to compete on the international stage for their country. (Agencies)
