New Delhi, Dec 5: On Thursday, Parliament approved a new bill intended to replace the antiquated Aircraft Act of 90 years and enhance the ease of doing business in the aviation sector.
The Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak 2024 secured passage in the Rajya Sabha via a voice vote, having received earlier approval from the Lok Sabha on August 9.
This legislation aims to eliminate redundancies and substitute the Aircraft Act of 1934, which has undergone 21 amendments over the years.
While addressing the Upper House during the bill’s debate, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu explained that the decision to transition the bill’s title from English to Hindi, which garnered some objections from members, was made to “showcase India’s heritage and culture,” asserting that “there was no violation of Constitutional rule.”
He acknowledged that it might be challenging to pronounce the Hindi title initially but stated that people would eventually adapt.
In response to concerns raised by some MPs regarding the soaring airfare, the minister mentioned that the government is working to improve accessibility through the Udaan scheme and is dedicated to ensuring fare affordability for passengers. (Agencies)
