NEW DELHI, Dec 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a two-day visit to Kuwait on Saturday, underscoring the shared interests of India and the Gulf nation in promoting peace, security, and stability in West Asia.
This visit marks the first by an Indian prime minister in 43 years, occurring shortly after the recent collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria and amidst discussions of a potential ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Indira Gandhi was the last Indian prime minister to visit Kuwait, back in 1981.
In his statement before departing, Modi highlighted that his discussions with the Kuwaiti leadership will aim at establishing a roadmap for a progressive partnership between India and Kuwait.
“We cherish the historical ties with Kuwait that have flourished over the years. Beyond our robust trade and energy collaboration, we share a deep interest in enhancing peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the West Asia region,” he stated.
The visit is made at the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
“I am optimistic that this visit will further fortify and solidify the bonds of friendship between the peoples of India and Kuwait,” Modi remarked.
He expressed eagerness for meetings with the Emir, the Crown Prince, and Kuwait’s Prime Minister.
“This will provide us with an opportunity to outline a roadmap for an innovative partnership for the benefit of our citizens and the wider region,” he noted.
“I am particularly looking forward to connecting with the Indian diaspora in Kuwait, whose contributions have significantly strengthened the friendship between our nations,” he added.
Modi’s itinerary includes visiting an Indian labor camp, engaging with the Indian community, and attending the Gulf Cup football tournament’s opening ceremony.
“I extend my gratitude to Kuwait’s leadership for the kind invitation to the inauguration of the Arabian Gulf Cup, a major sporting event in the Gulf region,” the prime minister expressed.
“I anticipate being part of this celebration of athletic excellence and regional unity,” he affirmed.
On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that enhancing bilateral relations in key areas like defense and trade would be a focal point during the prime minister’s visit.
Officials indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding a bilateral investment treaty and a defense cooperation agreement with Kuwait.
Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (Overseas Indian Affairs) in the MEA, mentioned during a media briefing that several bilateral agreements are expected to be finalized during the trip.
“This historic visit by the prime minister is set to usher in a new chapter in India-Kuwait relations,” he stated.
“It aims not only to solidify existing partnerships but also to explore new opportunities for future collaboration, reinforcing our shared values and establishing a stronger, more dynamic partnership,” he added.
India ranks among Kuwait’s top trading partners, with the Indian community being the largest expatriate group in the country.
Kuwait is a key trading partner for India, with bilateral trade estimated at USD 10.47 billion for 2023-24.
Kuwait is also India’s sixth-largest supplier of crude oil, fulfilling 3 percent of India’s energy needs.
For the first time in 2023-24, Indian exports to Kuwait reached USD 2 billion, while the Kuwait Investment Authority’s investments in India surpassed USD 10 billion. (Agencies)
