Kuwait City, Dec 22: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in extensive discussions with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, aiming to revitalize India-Kuwait relations, particularly in trade, investment, and energy sectors. Modi’s visit, which commenced on Saturday, marks the first by an Indian prime minister to Kuwait in 43 years. In addition to the Emir, the Prime Minister will meet with Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah.
The dialogues are expected to enhance collaboration across key areas, including defense and trade, as noted by officials. During his first day, Modi also addressed the Indian community and paid a visit to an Indian labor camp. The last Indian leader to visit Kuwait was Indira Gandhi in 1981.
Currently, India ranks among Kuwait’s top trading partners, with the Indian expatriate community being the largest in the Gulf nation. The bilateral trade for the fiscal year 2023-24 is valued at USD 10.47 billion, with Kuwait being the sixth largest crude oil supplier to India, fulfilling 3% of its energy requirements. Indian exports to Kuwait have reached USD 2 billion for the first time, while the Kuwait Investment Authority’s investments in India have surpassed USD 10 billion. (PTI)
