NEW DELHI, Dec 1: On the occasion of Border Security Force Raising Day Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his best wishes and acknowledged that the force’s vigilance and bravery play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
“Heartfelt greetings to the Border Security Force on their Raising Day! The BSF serves as a crucial line of defense, representing courage, unwavering dedication, and exceptional service. Their vigilance and bravery significantly contribute to our nation’s safety and security,” PM Modi expressed in a post on X.
The BSF, recognized as the world’s largest border guarding force with approximately 2.65 lakh personnel, commemorates its Raising Day each year on December 1.
Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, also shared his best wishes with personnel and families of BSF India.
“On this BSF Raising Day, I extend my greetings to the members of BSF India and their families. Guided by the motto “jiivn pryNtt krtvy”, the BSF upholds the sovereignty and security of our nation with remarkable courage and dedication. We salute their sacrifices and steadfast commitment,” LG Manoj Sinha stated on X.
Tasked with securing the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, the BSF is the only force that possesses clearly defined roles in both wartime and peacetime.
The force has repeatedly demonstrated its capabilities in fulfilling all assigned tasks during war and peacetime while maintaining peace and order at the borders.
BSF troops, stationed in the most challenging terrains and remote areas, have consistently acted as the protectors of India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Until 1965, the State Armed Police Battalion was responsible for guarding India’s border with Pakistan. However, after the Pakistani attack on Sardar Post, Chhar Bet, and Beria Bet in Kutch on April 9, 1965, it became evident that the State Armed Police could not adequately handle armed aggression. This led the Government of India to recognize the necessity for a specialized, centrally controlled Border Security Force equipped and trained to secure the international border with Pakistan. Following the recommendations made by the Committee of Secretaries, the Border Security Force was established on December 1, 1965.
Initially formed with 25 battalions in 1965, the BSF has grown over time in response to the nation’s need to combat militancy in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Northeast region.
With an authorized strength of over 2,65,000 personnel distributed among 192 battalions, the BSF is tasked with securing India’s borders, which span 6,386.36 kilometers with Pakistan and Bangladesh. (Agencies)
