KATHMANDU, Feb 27: On Thursday, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli of Nepal highlighted the necessity of global cooperation in the digital era, asserting that effectively addressing crime requires joint efforts across nations.
While inaugurating an international conference on digital crime hosted by the Office of the Attorney General, Oli remarked, “Crime control cannot be effectively achieved by the efforts of a single nation.”
The Prime Minister stressed that the use of electronic technology in crime investigations would boost international collaboration, especially in combating various types of crimes.
He acknowledged that the management of crime poses a significant challenge for civilized societies due to the misuse of science and technology, which, while providing convenience and comfort, can also facilitate wrongdoing. Nevertheless, he made it clear that the government’s position is that all individuals should benefit from democratic rights.
Oli clarified that no legislation would be introduced to restrict social media usage, asserting that “necessary amendments will be considered after a review of the Constitution following its 10 years of implementation.”
“The advancements of the 20th century brought about significant inventions but have frequently been misused, leading to organized criminal endeavors,” he noted.
“We must leverage AI and digital technology to create conditions under which crimes cannot be executed, ensuring that if they do occur, impartial investigations can be conducted to secure justice,” he further added.
He remarked that while digital technology serves positive objectives, it is also exploited for criminal activities. Conferences like this play a vital role in fighting crime and ensuring justice is served effectively.
Oli affirmed that digital technology should ultimately be aimed at enhancing human happiness and prosperity. “Legislation has been instituted to regulate indecency that disrupts societal norms in the guise of exercising rights.”
“To realize the national vision of ‘Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali’, good governance and the active participation of people in their social and economic rights are essential,” he stated, though he cautioned against the misuse of these rights.
During the event, Attorney General Ramesh Badal commented, “The rise in digital usage within criminal activity—including misuse of social media, digital fraud, and financial crimes—presents significant challenges.” (PTI)
