KATHMANDU, Feb 28: A powerful earthquake struck the Sindhupalchowk district early Friday morning, injuring at least four individuals across Kathmandu and surrounding areas.
The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.1, was registered at 2:51 am with its epicenter located in Bhairabkunda, Sindhupalchowk, approximately 65 km east of Kathmandu, as reported by the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
Post-tremor, several houses in the Sindhupalchowk district sustained visible cracks. In addition to the Kathmandu valley, residents in southern and eastern Nepal also felt the quake, according to officials.
The seismic event prompted many in Kathmandu and nearby regions to rush outside in fear. Two individuals were reported injured in Kathmandu, and an inmate at Chautara prison also suffered injuries while attempting to escape the facility during the tremor.
Furthermore, an elderly man was injured in a Sindhupalchowk village while trying to exit his home after the quake, officials indicated.
Nepal is situated in one of the world’s most seismically active zones (Seismic zones IV and V), rendering the nation particularly susceptible to earthquakes.
The most devastating earthquake to date occurred in April 2015, when a 7.8 magnitude quake resulted in over 9,000 fatalities and damaged more than 1 million structures. (PTI)
