New Delhi, Feb 19: On Wednesday, the BJP announced the appointment of former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and national secretary Om Prakash Dhankar as central observers for the election of the leader of its Delhi legislature party, who will become the next chief minister of the national capital.
The legislature party is scheduled to convene later this evening to select its leader, creating anticipation regarding the decision from the BJP’s top leadership.
The party confirmed in a statement that its Parliamentary Board designated Prasad and Dhankar as central observers. Earlier in the day, several Board members gathered at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence to discuss the matter.
With the BJP regaining power in Delhi after nearly 27 years, its assembly of MLAs includes a mix of newcomers and experienced politicians, presenting a broad spectrum of candidates for the chief minister position.
Following the selection by the party MLAs, the new leader will meet Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at the Raj Niwas to formally claim the mandate for forming a new government. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for an elaborate swearing-in ceremony for the new government at Ramleela Ground on Thursday afternoon.
Approximately 50,000 attendees, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet members, and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, are expected to participate in the ceremony.
The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats in the recent assembly election.
