Actor-producer Taapsee Pannu emphasizes that sheer hard work isn’t a surefire path to success in the film industry, highlighting the prevalent myth that the cinematic world operates on fairness.
At the ABP Network’s Ideas of India 2025 event on Friday, the 37-year-old actress expressed her views on the challenging truths of the film business.
“The common belief is that hard work alone will lead to success, which is not true (in this industry). Fairness is often absent in the film world. If you expect everything to be equitable, you will be disappointed,” she stated.
“Expectations of fairness will often lead to unfair realities. You’ll encounter numerous challenges, so set aside your ego; otherwise, disappointment awaits you. This isn’t limited to Bollywood; I wouldn’t deem myself a victim of the industry,” Pannu remarked.
She encouraged aspiring performers to have an alternative plan in case their ambitions do not materialize as expected.
“I had a Plan B in place. I had completed my engineering degree, had a job lined up, and even considered pursuing an MBA. I made sure to cover all bases,” Pannu shared.
Pannu pointed out that actors who are considered “outsiders” often find that their success is not solely dependent on talent but heavily influenced by how audiences respond to their performances.
“Our standing is determined by the audience’s preferences. If they favor hero-centric films in cinemas over ours, success becomes a challenge. The industry doesn’t push us out; instead, it provides opportunities,” she explained.
The actress also reflected on her marital life.
Pannu, who married her long-time partner, badminton champion Mathias Boe, in 2023, mentioned that she felt no need for a “press release” regarding her wedding.
“I first met him on the badminton court while watching him play in a domestic league. I’ve known my husband for ten years, and now it has been eleven years,” she recounted.
“I’ve never concealed this aspect from anyone. The reason it may not have attracted attention is that he isn’t a cricketer or businessman. However, I have always openly discussed our relationship whenever asked. My marriage is thriving,” she affirmed.
Pannu shared that she approached her marriage with thoughtfulness, revealing that she wed nine years after Boe’s proposal.
“Having witnessed many marriages falter, I was apprehensive. Our profession is filled with ups and downs, and I wished to avoid that in my personal life. Therefore, after numerous trials and considerations, I decided to marry. My personal life is so stable that some may perceive it as dull,” she stated. (PTI)
