New Delhi, Jan 31: On Friday, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized India’s progress in cultivating a “world-class sports ecosystem” and praised the nation’s recent achievements in international events such as the Olympics, Paralympics, and the World Chess Championship.
She highlighted that the government has implemented “significant steps” to enhance sports infrastructure with initiatives like the Khelo India Scheme and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
During her address to a joint sitting of Parliament, she mentioned the creation of the National Sports University as a vital advancement in this area.
“A dedicated sports center for Divyang athletes has been inaugurated in Gwalior,” she revealed, reflecting the government’s dedication to inclusive sports development.
The President commended Indian athletes for their remarkable performances on the global stage, stating, “Our teams, whether competing at the Olympics or Paralympics, have excelled.”
She also noted the growing prominence of India in chess, pointing out the nation’s impressive track record at the World Chess Championship.
Murmu further stressed the importance of fitness in national development, highlighting the Fit India Movement as a crucial initiative aimed at empowering the youth of the country.
“Through the Fit India Movement, we are fostering a robust and empowered youth force,” she asserted. (PTI)
