Chandigarh, Dec 22: Punjab Police have dismantled a trans-border drug smuggling operation, arresting two suspects and seizing 10 kg of heroin in Amritsar district, as confirmed by an official on Sunday.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav announced that the arrested individuals were linked to smugglers operating from Pakistan.
“In a significant breakthrough, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has apprehended two individuals—Sukhdev Singh and Avtar Singh—associated with Pakistan-based smugglers and confiscated 10 kg of heroin,” Yadav wrote in a post on X.
“Initial investigations indicate that the arrested men were in communication with smugglers from Pakistan, and that in 2015, two Pakistani nationals had entered the country with 19.5 kg of heroin. They and the arrested suspects were also caught with 2.5 kg of heroin, ₹65 lakh in drug money, a pistol, and a rifle,” he elaborated.
He noted that while Sukhdev Singh was released from prison last year, Avtar Singh was granted bail in September.
A case has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at the Police Station Gate Hakima in Amritsar. The senior officer also indicated that investigations are ongoing to track the connections both backwards and forwards. (PTI)
