JAMMU, January 30: Puri Oil Mills (POM), a prominent manufacturer of mustard oil, has called on the Government to provide support to the sector through Production-Linked Incentives (PLI), the creation of a development board, and the resolution of export challenges in advance of the upcoming Union Budget.
In a press release, Vivek Puri, Managing Director of POM and promoter of P Mark Mustard Oil, highlighted the significant role of mustard oil within India’s MSME sector, asserting its considerable potential for growth to cater to increasing domestic and international demand.
He stated, “Mustard oil is integral to the food processing industry, and government support through production-linked incentives is essential for strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and boosting exports.”
POM also proposed the establishment of a ‘Mustard Oil Development Board’, akin to the Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council (MPOPC), to advocate for Indian mustard oil as a healthy and sustainable option on the global stage.
“The suggested board would concentrate on promoting mustard seed cultivation and fostering research on value-added products,” he added.
Additionally, Puri called for the declaration of an International Year of Mustard Oil, initiatives to combat adulteration, and a stronger focus on mustard seed farming.
Importantly, mustard seeds contain 40% oil, which is significantly higher than that of other oilseeds.
Founded in 1933, Puri Oil Mills Limited operates three manufacturing facilities in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana, producing P Mark mustard oil for the Indian market.
