Srinagar, Feb 28: The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam, announced on Friday that the crescent moon has not been sighted, meaning the first day of Ramadan will fall on Sunday (March 02).
He stated that there were no reports or evidence from any sources regarding the sighting of the Ramadan moon today. “Thus, the first day of fasting will be on Sunday,” he confirmed.
Earlier this month, he established a moon-sighting committee for J&K, which includes the Valley’s chief cleric and Hurriyat chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, as a member.
This announcement follows a controversy from last year regarding the moon sighting that caused division among local Muslims over the start of Ramadan. (KNO)
