KANNAUJ (UP), Jan 12: The rescue operation at the Kannauj Railway Station concluded Sunday morning, successfully freeing 28 workers after a challenging 16-hour effort throughout the night, according to officials. All of the rescued workers have been taken to a hospital for treatment, and there are no reported fatalities.
The collapse of the shuttering at the under-construction building occurred Saturday afternoon, trapping the workers beneath.
Rescue teams, comprised of personnel from both national and state disaster response forces as well as railway units, worked diligently through the frigid night to remove the rubble and rescue the trapped individuals.
District Magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukl visited the scene early on Sunday and expressed relief at the absence of any casualties from the unfortunate event.
CCTV footage from the area shows a laborer attempting to rectify the shuttering (a temporary support structure used in concrete) just before the roof collapsed, indicating that a beam being handled by the worker may have caused the shuttering to slip and consequently lead to the collapse.
In response to the incident, the North Eastern Railway (NER) established a three-member committee on Saturday to investigate the collapse, which will include the Chief Engineer for Planning and Design, the Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Izzatnagar), and the Chief Security Commissioner of the Railway Protection Force.
This construction was part of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), aimed at upgrading the infrastructure at the Kannauj Railway Station.
NER officials have announced compensations for the injured workers: Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries and up to Rs 2.5 lakh for those with severe injuries. (PTI)
