WASHINGTON, Jan 15: A group of fifteen lawmakers, spearheaded by Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, has put forward a resolution in the US House of Representatives to declare January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month.
This resolution aligns with the start of Pongal, a significant festival celebrated by Tamils.
“As a Tamil-American, I take pride in presenting this bipartisan resolution that honors the Tamil language, heritage, and culture both in the United States and globally,” Krishnamoorthi stated after the announcement of the resolution.
He was supported by five other Indian-American lawmakers — Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Shri Thanedar, Pramila Jayapal, and Suhas Subramanyam, who co-sponsored the resolution. Additional co-sponsors included Nicole Malliotakis, Ilhan Omar, Yvette Clarke, Sara Jacobs, Deborah Ross, Danny Davis, Dina Titus, Don Davis, and Summer Lee.
“America embodies a blend of diverse languages, cultures, ideas, and traditions, and I genuinely hope that this resolution will illuminate the rich and unique culture, alongside the remarkable contributions of the over 350,000 Tamil-Americans today,” Krishnamoorthi remarked.
He called upon his colleagues to promptly advance the resolution in recognition of the significant role Tamil-Americans play in their communities.
Globally, more than eighty million people speak Tamil, which is recognized as one of the oldest languages in the world.
Tamil-Americans United PAC expressed support for the resolution, noting that it showcases the rich heritage of the ancient Tamil people and their essential contributions to contemporary society.
“We encourage Tamil-Americans to actively participate in efforts to ensure the successful advancement of this legislation in the US Congress,” they stated.
The Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America stated, “As proud Tamil-Americans, we wholeheartedly endorse Rep. Krishnamoorthi’s initiative to establish a Tamil Language and Heritage Month.”
“Tamils have much to offer to this beloved country we call home, and highlighting our history, language, and culture will enable us to share meaningful insights with our fellow citizens,” they added.
The US Tamil Action Group also expressed gratitude to Krishnamoorthi and urged Congress to swiftly pass the resolution.
“Tamil-Americans hold dear our rich and ancient language, traditions, and culture, and we recognize that we have much to contribute to America’s diverse and vibrant tapestry of traditions,” they stated.
People for Equality and Relief in Lanka mentioned that the resolution underscores the extensive history and cultural richness of the Tamil community. (PTI)
