New Delhi, Dec 20: The Rajya Sabha passed a motion on Friday via voice vote to appoint 12 of its members to the joint committee of Parliament tasked with reviewing the two bills on simultaneous elections.
Right after the House reconvened following a brief morning adjournment, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar invited Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to propose the motion for member nominations to the committee.
In presenting the motion, Meghwal indicated that the Upper House resolves to nominate 12 members to join the joint committee.
The Rajya Sabha members selected include Ghanshyam Tiwari, Bhubaneshwar Kalita, Dr K Laxman, and Kavita Patidar from the BJP, Sanjay Kumar Jha from the JD(U), Randeep Singh Surjewala and Mukul Wasnik from the Congress, Saket Gokhale from the TMC, P Wilson from the DMK, Sanjay Singh from AAP, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj from the BJD, and V Vijaisai Reddy from the YSRCP.
Just moments before the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die, the House approved a resolution proposing the two bills on simultaneous elections to a joint committee of Parliament.
Among the panel’s members, 27 will come from the Lok Sabha, while 12 will be nominated from the Rajya Sabha.
Former Union ministers Anurag Thakur and P P Chaudhary from the BJP, as well as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the Congress, are among the Lok Sabha representatives who will serve on the joint committee.
The two ‘one nation one election’ (ONOE) bills, one of which requires a Constitutional amendment, outline the procedure for conducting simultaneous elections and were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday amid heated discussions. PTI SKC IJT IJT
