JAMMU, Dec 27: As part of an ongoing enforcement initiative focusing on overloading, overcharging, and other significant infractions under the Motor Vehicles Act and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, the Motor Vehicles Department executed a targeted enforcement campaign in the Jammu district.
This operation was conducted under the direct oversight of Regional Transport Officer Jammu Pankaj Bhagotra, adhering to special instructions from Vishesh Mahajan, the Transport Commissioner of J&K.
The enforcement efforts targeted areas within Jammu city and the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, employing various teams specifically assembled for this initiative, aiming to ensure compliance with regulations applicable to e-rickshaws operating in the city.
This initiative was prompted by complaints regarding numerous e-rickshaws operating without valid driving licenses. During the operation, approximately 475 vehicles were inspected for violations such as issues with Registration Certificates (RC), overloading passengers, speeding, and non-adherence to other essential regulations.
Of the 450 e-rickshaws checked, 91 were seized, and a total fine of ₹2,30,000 (Two lakh thirty thousand Rupees) was imposed.
Officials emphasized that the Motor Vehicles Department is dedicated to ensuring the safe and responsible operation of all vehicles, including e-rickshaws, within its jurisdiction. They also stated that such enforcement drives will continue in the future, and violators are advised to comply with the rules to avoid stricter penalties.
Additionally, the enforcement team educated e-rickshaw drivers that these vehicles are intended for last-mile connectivity and are prohibited from operating on National Highways and other major roads, as per their original purpose in the transport framework.
The enforcement team comprised Rehana Tabassam, ARTO (HQ) Jammu, Mudasir Iqbal, ARTO (BOI-G) Jammu, Bipin Singh Charak, ARTO Flying Squad, alongside Motor Vehicles Inspectors (MVIs) Vikas Srivats, Jagandeep Singh, Rajeev Kundal, Amanish Sharma, and MVTA Tarunjot Singh.
