LONDON, Jan 22: Rupert Murdoch’s UK tabloids have issued a rare apology to Prince Harry as part of a settlement for his lawsuit over privacy invasion, with his attorney confirming on Wednesday that a significant amount will be paid to him.
David Sherborne, Harry’s lawyer, presented a statement in court indicating that News Group has extended a “full and unequivocal apology to the Duke of Sussex” for years of unlawful intrusion into his privacy.
This surprising declaration came from London’s High Court just as the Duke of Sussex’s trial was set to commence against the publishers of The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, who had been accused of unlawfully spying on him for decades.
At 40, Harry, the younger son of King Charles III, alongside one other individual, were the last two claimants from a group of more than 1,300 who had reached settlements with News Group Newspapers concerning allegations of phone hacking and unlawful intrusion into their lives.
Among all legal actions taken against the publisher since a substantial phone hacking scandal led to the closure of News of the World in 2011, Harry’s case came closest to reaching trial. (AP)
