Chhatarpur (MP), Feb 26: President Droupadi Murmu emphasized on Wednesday that the saints of India have played a crucial role in securing a dignified position for women in society, marking a shift “from women-development to women-led development.”
Addressing a large wedding ceremony at Bageshwar Dham in Garha village, located in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district, where 251 couples tied the knot, Murmu stated, “Contemporary spiritual leaders can significantly contribute to creating a self-reliant, harmonious, and environmentally sustainable India.”
She acknowledged the saint community’s significant efforts in combating social injustices and ensuring women’s rightful status in society, saying, “Today, as our nation transitions to women-led development, it is imperative that we all assist in empowering our daughters and sisters.”
The President urged focus on women’s education, health, and safety, asserting, “Even our small initiatives can empower them.” She encouraged women to persist in their educational and self-reliance endeavors.
“Throughout our heritage, saints have guided people for centuries, speaking out against societal injustices and discrimination based on caste and gender,” she remarked.
Murmu highlighted the inspirational teachings of figures like Guru Nanak, Sant Ravidas, Sant Kabir Das, Meera Bai, and Sant Tukaram, who have all inspired followers to embrace virtuous pathways.
She noted the saints’ role in enlightening society about superstitions and promoting the rejection of untouchability and caste discrimination.
Commending Bageshwar Dham for organizing the mass wedding event, Murmu mentioned that sewing machines and other essential items would be provided to help these women become self-sufficient.
“I urge all women to continue their pursuit of education and strive for self-reliance. Your success will contribute to the success of our society and nation. We aim to commemorate the centenary of our independence in 2047 and elevate India to a developed nation,” Murmu declared.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the couples married during the mass wedding would receive financial assistance of Rs 51,000 each through state government initiatives.
