NEW DELHI, Dec 27: The Supreme Court on Friday raised alarms regarding the safety and wellbeing of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is currently engaged in an indefinite hunger strike. The court instructed the Punjab government to take all necessary steps to ensure that he receives medical assistance.
A vacation bench consisting of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia issued a notice to the Punjab government in response to a contempt petition filed against its chief secretary for failing to comply with a prior court order concerning medical support for Dallewal.
“If there are issues related to law and order, you must manage them decisively. Someone’s life is at risk. This matter deserves your utmost attention. Medical help must be provided, and it appears you are not adhering to this requirement,” the bench remarked.
The apex court ordered the state government to submit a compliance report by Saturday, at which point the case will be reviewed again.
Dallewal has been on an indefinite fast at the Khanauri border since November 26, advocating for the Centre to fulfill farmers’ demands, which include a legal assurance of minimum support prices for crops. (AGENCIES)
