Srinagar, Jan 13: The night temperatures across the Kashmir valley have dropped significantly, resulting in harsh cold conditions, with Srinagar reporting a low of -5.1°C on Monday, according to officials.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar anticipates dry weather continuing until January 21, with possibilities of light snowfall in isolated higher areas on January 15, 16, and 21 throughout Jammu and Kashmir.
The lowest temperature recorded in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, on the night of Sunday into Monday was -5.1°C, compared to -3.0°C the prior night. This measurement was 3.1°C below the seasonal average for this time of year, stated the Met office.
Pahalgam experienced the coldest temperature in the Kashmir valley, plummeting to -8.4°C on Monday from -6.2°C the day before, which was 2.5°C below normal for this popular tourist destination in Anantnag district.
The ski resort of Gulmarg also saw a notable drop in temperature, registering -6.5°C compared to -5.6°C previously, although this was 1.3°C above the normal for this north Kashmir tourist hotspot.
The beautiful Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, central Kashmir, recorded a low of -9.8°C, down from -6.5°C on Sunday.
Kupwara reported a low of -5.5°C, a decrease from -4.0°C the previous night, which is 3.0°C below the normal for this frontier district in northern Kashmir.
Kokernag in southern Kashmir noted a slight improvement at -3.4°C on Monday compared to -3.9°C recorded on Saturday, while Qazigund fell to -6.4°C from -4.0°C, which is 3.4°C below the seasonal average for this entry point to Kashmir on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, according to the MeT office.
