NEW DELHI, Feb 19: Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA, has been announced as the new Chief Minister of Delhi by the BJP. Gupta was selected as the Leader of the House during the BJP legislature party meeting. This marks the party’s return to power in Delhi after more than 26 years, concluding the decade-long leadership of Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP.
Gupta is set to take the oath of office, along with her Cabinet ministers, at Ramlila Ground on Thursday.
She won her constituency in Shalimar Bagh by a significant margin, defeating AAP candidate Bandna Kumari by over 29,000 votes in the February 5 Assembly elections.
The legislature party meeting was attended by all 48 newly elected BJP MLAs, alongside Central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and O P Dhankar.
The newly appointed Chief Minister will meet with Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena at Raj Niwas to formally claim the formation of a BJP-led government in Delhi.
Gupta will become the fourth woman to hold the position of Chief Minister in Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi. (Agencies)
