JAMMU, Jan 1: Shreya Gupta, a distinguished fencer from Jammu and Kashmir, who is a National champion and International Fencer, achieved yet another significant milestone in her career by winning a Bronze medal at the ongoing 35th Senior National Fencing Championship taking place in Kannur, Kerala. The Championship commenced on December 31, 2024, and will wrap up on January 3, 2025.
Shreya reached the semifinals, where she encountered Olympian Bhawani Devi in a closely contested match. Despite having an early lead of 8-4, Bhawani’s seasoned experience turned the tide as she clinched victory with a score of 15-11. Nevertheless, Shreya’s performance was praiseworthy, demonstrating her exceptional skills and tenacity.
In the medal match, Shreya made a strong comeback, overcoming Kerala’s Jose Josna Christy with a score of 15-9. Prior to that, during the knockout stages, Shreya showcased her dominance by defeating her opponents Prakriti Sharma from Rajasthan and Vandita Barad from Gujarat, both with an impressive score of 15-6.
With an impressive tally of 5 International medals and 20 National Golds, Shreya continues to shine on both national and international platforms.
The Secretary of J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gull, commended Shreya for her outstanding achievement while also acknowledging her coach, Shotu Lal Sharma, for his vital contribution to Shreya’s success and for bringing acclaim to Jammu and Kashmir.
