Belagavi, Dec 26: Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) leader Sonia Gandhi emphasized on Thursday that Mahatma Gandhi remains a key source of inspiration, warning that his legacy is under threat from the current powers in Delhi as well as the ideologies and institutions that support them. During her message read at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Sonia criticized the Modi government and the RSS, urging unity against the forces that she accused of creating a hostile environment leading to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. Although she was unable to attend the meeting in person, Sonia recalled that Mahatma Gandhi’s ascension to the presidency of Congress was pivotal for the party and the independence movement.

“This was a transformative moment in our nation’s history. Today, we recommit to preserving and promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, which has been and will continue to be our guiding force,” she stated. “He shaped and inspired our exceptional leaders of that time. However, his legacy now faces threats from those in power in New Delhi and the ideologies that uphold them,” she added.

Sonia further criticized organizations that opposed Mahatma Gandhi during India’s freedom struggle and remarked that these entities have created a toxic climate that contributed to his assassination while glorifying his assassins. She noted that Gandhian institutions are under attack across the country and acknowledged the significance of the meeting being titled ‘Nava Satyagraha Baithak.’

“It’s our sacred duty to renew our commitment to confront these forces with all our strength and unwavering resolve,” she asserted. Sonia expressed confidence that discussions about strengthening the party to face upcoming challenges would occur during the meeting. “Our historic organization has repeatedly shown resilience. Let us all progress from this gathering, determined to address the numerous challenges our party encounters with renewed urgency and purpose,” she said.

The CPP chairperson voiced her regret for missing this “historic occasion.” She reminded attendees that the 39th session of the Indian National Congress took place a century ago at the same venue, making the assembly at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar especially fitting.
