SEOUL, Dec 12: The South Korean Parliament has announced that six opposition parties have joined forces to submit a fresh impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol in response to his declaration of martial law.
This motion was officially presented by the main opposition Democratic Party along with five other smaller parties on Thursday afternoon, December 12, 2024.
Their objective is to bring the motion to a vote on the floor this Saturday, December 14, 2024.
Yoon’s brief martial law declaration on December 3 has led to significant political unrest and widespread protests demanding his resignation. The Democratic Party contends that Yoon’s decree constitutes an act of rebellion.
Earlier that day, President Yoon defended his decision, labeling it a legitimate exercise of governance and rejecting the claims of rebellion.
Should Yoon be impeached, his presidential authority would be suspended pending a decision from the Constitutional Court regarding his removal or reinstatement. In the event of his dismissal, a new presidential election would need to be conducted within 60 days. (Agencies)
