SEOUL, Jan 10: On Friday, South Korea’s acting leader, Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, accepted the resignation of Park Jong-joon, the head of the presidential security service. This follows his police questioning regarding the service’s interference in the detention of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol last week.
Choi expressed his regret about the altercations between law enforcement and the presidential security team during the unsuccessful attempts to apprehend Yoon. He urged lawmakers to work together in a bipartisan manner to initiate an independent investigation.
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, along with law enforcement, is preparing to make a second attempt to arrest Yoon. This inquiry focuses on whether his brief declaration of martial law on December 3 constituted an attempted rebellion. Previously, the presidential security service obstructed an effort to detain Yoon at his official residence, which he has remained in for several weeks. (AP)
