Srinagar, Feb 28: Severe weather conditions have caused the closure of the crucial Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road that connects to the Ladakh Union Territory due to significant snow accumulation. Flight operations at Srinagar International Airport have also been disrupted, according to officials.
The Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, witnessed light to moderate snowfall overnight, hindering normal activities across the region.
Airport Director Javid Anjum reported, “All morning flights are delayed due to poor visibility caused by weather conditions at Srinagar International Airport.”
Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been deployed to clear snow from the airport runway after a fresh layer of snow fell today.
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway is blocked due to snow between Ramsoo and Qazigund and there are reports of falling rocks and landslides between Nashri and NAVYUG Tunnel.
The BRO has mobilized personnel and machinery to remove snow from the highway and restore traffic flow.
The Batote-Doda road has also been closed because of landslides at Ragi Nalla. In addition, roads including the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road, which connects to Ladakh, alongside the Bhaderwah-Chamba Road and the Mughal/Sinthan roads, remain closed due to heavy snow accumulation, as reported by Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police on X.
Despite the difficult weather, the Jammu and Kashmir School Board of Education (JKBOSE) has confirmed that the 11th class exams will proceed as planned. A communiqué stated, “There will be no change in the exam schedule for today,” according to officials.
In contrast, the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) has announced a postponement of the 1st semester examinations set for today. The Controller of Examinations stated, “This is to inform all concerned that the 1st semester exams scheduled for 28-02-2025 have been postponed, and new dates will be provided later.”
