On January 2, SHIMLA: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the state government plans to allocate 22 new hydropower projects with a cumulative capacity of 828 MW.
These projects, with capacities ranging from 6.5 MW to 400 MW, will be distributed across the districts of Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Shimla.
The largest grouping includes nine projects in the Chenab river basin, contributing a total of 595 MW. Moreover, eight projects amounting to 169 MW are designated for the Sutlej river basin, four projects with a total capacity of 55 MW will be developed in the Ravi basin, and one project will add 9 MW in the Beas basin.
This initiative marks the first time the state government will allocate these projects to other states, union territories, and both central and state enterprises.
“The projects will be granted on a 40-year lease with an initial premium of Rs 10 lakh for each megawatt,” remarked the CM.
A communication has already been sent by the Energy Directorate to the secretaries of various states and central enterprises regarding this initiative.
The Chief Minister emphasized that these projects will ensure a reliable power supply, generate revenue through free electricity, and create job opportunities for local communities.
“Additionally, it will encourage growth in surrounding areas and set the stage for Himachal Pradesh to emerge as one of the most prosperous states in India,” he concluded. (PTI)
