SRINAGAR, Feb 2: On Sunday, Satish Sharma, the Minister for Science & Technology, Information Technology, Youth Services and Sports, stated that Jammu and Kashmir cannot progress without the restoration of statehood. Sharma made these comments to the media after launching the inaugural snow skiing course at the scenic Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, Central Kashmir.
“I trust that Delhi will grant us statehood because Jammu and Kashmir is India’s crown that requires special care,” Sharma expressed. He mentioned that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had been meeting with various stakeholders, and he is hopeful for positive developments soon.
“We eagerly await the gift of statehood, which would empower the administration to create numerous opportunities,” he remarked. Responding to a query, Sharma noted, “We have limited resources, and currently, our mandate is set at ₹500. We cannot account for ₹5 lakh without restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.”
“We pray for divine blessings and hope that the Delhi government will restore what was taken from us, allowing us to address the concerns of our citizens,” he emphasized. Sharma urged the importance of moving forward positively, avoiding any backward glances.
“In five years, I envision Jammu and Kashmir becoming a leading hub in sports, education, and tourism,” Sharma added.
Addressing the newly launched skiing courses in Sonamarg, he highlighted that for the first time, training programs spanning 2 to 3 weeks would prepare participants for international competition. Previously, skiing events were exclusively held in Gulmarg, making this a significant expansion into Sonamarg.
Sharma recounted that following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Sonamarg to inaugurate the Z-Morh tunnel, it was decided in collaboration with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to develop Sonamarg as a premier global tourist destination.
“Today, I am pleased to announce that we have successfully commenced the skiing courses,” he said, adding the importance of diverting youth from drug abuse and excessive mobile use into sporting activities.
Sharma acknowledged the recent advancements in sports within the state, crediting the collective efforts of parents, teachers, and sports officials over the past three months.
In response to another inquiry, Sharma indicated plans to expand the ice skating area in Sonamarg shortly. Land will be acquired for a multifunctional facility to host various sports courses along with accommodation options for participants.
On the topic of Rehbar-e-Khel teachers, the Minister stated, “These teachers play a crucial role in our sports initiatives. I will diligently advocate for their issues in Delhi, seeking permanent employment solutions.” (Agencies)
