SRINAGAR, Jan 1: The dismantling of one of the oldest security bunkers in Srinagar marks a notable improvement in the overall security environment of the Kashmir Valley, nearly three decades after its establishment.
This bunker, set up by the Border Security Force (BSF) in the early 1990s, is located in Braripora within the Safakadal area of the city.
“The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which occupied the bunker and my nearby property, has vacated the premises. The bunker was constructed in the early 1990s,” stated Jayiz Ahmad Alaie.
Residents have expressed their support for the bunker’s removal.
“Most bunkers were taken down in the last decade, but this one remained active. It was likely the largest bunker in the city and took up a significant portion of the road,” remarked local resident Tanveer Ahmad.
He added that the bunker’s presence often led to traffic congestion during peak hours, and its removal should facilitate smoother vehicular movement.
A senior security official mentioned that the necessity for security bunkers is assessed regularly.
“Should a bunker be required, we will construct it. Conversely, if a bunker is deemed unnecessary, we will dismantle it,” the official stated, preferring to remain anonymous.
