Srinagar, Feb 21: In the bustling commercial center of Lal Chowk, local traders have installed signboards and standees outside their shops to urge tourists visiting Kashmir to avoid the consumption of liquor and drugs.
While warmly welcoming tourists, they emphasize the importance of maintaining a respectful atmosphere.
The signage placed throughout Lal Chowk states: “Welcome dear tourists! The Traders Association of Central Lal Chowk invites you to explore the beauty of our paradise on earth! For a memorable and enjoyable visit, we kindly request: Love and cherish your family,” “Please avoid liquor, drugs, spitting in public, and smoking. Respect our culture and traditions. Stay blessed and enjoy your time in our mesmerizing city,” it reads.
Bilal Ahmad, the President of the Traders Association, explained that this initiative was started due to the rising number of incidents involving tourists consuming alcohol and engaging in altercations, particularly with their families.
“Shopkeepers often observe intoxicated tourists in disputes with their families, upsetting women and children who are left in tears and shock. We warmly welcome all visitors but strongly encourage them to refrain from alcohol to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable environment for everyone,” he stated.
Sheeraz Ahmad Mir, the association’s general secretary, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collective responsibility to uphold the cultural values of the city while ensuring a safe and pleasant experience for visitors.
The traders are optimistic that their message will foster responsible tourism and encourage visitors to honor Kashmiri traditions during their stay in the valley.
Locals and tourists alike have welcomed the initiative.
“We want tourists to visit and enjoy, but it’s essential to respect the culture and traditions of this place. Consuming alcohol or other intoxicants is harmful, so it’s best to avoid them,” remarked a local, Faisal Dar.
Tourist Sujata added, “If you’re here with family, enjoy your time and explore. What’s the point of using intoxicants? However, if you’re with friends and wish to indulge a bit, please do so in the privacy of your hotel. It’s inappropriate to behave that way in public.”
