RAMBAN, Feb 12: In response to Section 194-E of the Motor Vehicle Act-1988, the Traffic Police on the National Highway (NHW) have released a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aimed at facilitating the smooth passage of ambulances along the highway.
The issued circular outlines that the Act stipulates penalties for individuals who, while operating a motor vehicle, fail to yield to the side of the road upon the approach of emergency vehicles, including ambulances. Offenders may face imprisonment for up to six months or a fine of ten thousand rupees.
“To prevent traffic congestion and promote the uninterrupted movement of ambulances through NHW Ramban, we have outlined a series of SOPs for strict enforcement by Traffic Supervisory officials within their designated areas of responsibility,” the statement continued.
“Traffic Officers/Officials are obligated to prioritize the passage of ambulances upon receiving any alert regarding the movement of emergency service vehicles that are transporting critically ill patients, trauma cases, or deceased individuals within their designated areas.
Color coding will be used: Red for critical patients, Blue for non-critical patients, and Black for deceased individuals during ambulance transit.
Regular coordination is required among Traffic Officers regarding traffic pressure points and the availability of alternative routes to ensure the safe and efficient movement of ambulances.
It’s also essential to maintain close contact with Traffic Control Units, PCRs, APCRs, local hospital emergency services, and district administration, including NGOs and other stakeholders, to guarantee the safety of patients during transit.
The TCU Ramban/Udhampur will maintain open communication with healthcare facilities regarding traffic status, road conditions, weather issues, and potential alternative routes to facilitate smooth patient transport.
