Srinagar, January 17: On Friday, Transport Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir, Vishesh Paul Mahajan, announced that the transport subsidy scheme, part of a larger initiative to phase out vehicles older than 15 years, is receiving encouraging feedback.
During a media briefing in Srinagar, Mahajan mentioned that operators of buses, matadors, and minibuses within this age group are eligible to apply for a subsidy by scrapping their old vehicles and submitting proof of the scrapping process. “We have published advertisements. The RTO informed me that approximately 35 applications have been submitted,” he stated, encouraging greater participation in the scheme.
Mahajan noted that nearly 100 applications had been received from Jammu. He also highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance road safety in the region, especially during the current Road Safety Month.
The Transport Commissioner emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to foster a safer driving environment. He urged drivers to use seat belts and helmets, warning that violators could face severe repercussions, including driving license suspension and vehicle confiscation. “If someone’s life is jeopardized because of your actions, it is our responsibility to take appropriate measures against you,” he remarked.
Mahajan cautioned that strict penalties would be imposed on those engaging in reckless stunts or violating rules, particularly in cases where parents fail to control their children’s behaviors. (KNO)
