WASHINGTON, Dec 25: President-elect Donald Trump has criticized outgoing President Joe Biden for commuting the sentences of 37 inmates on federal death row, labeling the decision a setback for the victims’ families and supporters.
“Joe Biden has just commuted the Death Sentences for 37 of our country’s worst offenders. The details of their crimes are shocking and hard to believe. It makes no sense. The victims’ relatives and friends are heartbroken. They can’t believe this is occurring!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
On Monday, Biden commuted the sentences for 37 out of 40 people on federal death row, converting their death penalties to life imprisonment without the chance of parole.
Reports indicate that the list consists of at least five child murderers and numerous mass murderers.
In his remarks, Biden stated that he denounces these criminals, mourns for the victims of their heinous actions, and empathizes with the families who have endured “unimaginable and irreparable loss.”
He also expressed that he is “more convinced than ever” about the necessity of abolishing the death penalty at the federal level.
The three individuals who did not receive commutations are Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013 that killed three; white supremacist Dylann Roof, who murdered nine African Americans in a Charleston church in June 2015; and Robert Bowers, who was involved in the October 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 11 people.
