PALM BEACH, Feb 1: President Donald Trump has dismissed Rohit Chopra from his position as the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, marking another decision to remove a Biden administration appointee.
Chopra was a significant regulatory figure from the previous Democratic administration and remained in his role since Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
During Trump’s initial term, he appointed Chopra as a Democratic member of the Federal Trade Commission.
An email from the White House was the channel through which Chopra learned of his termination, as reported by an anonymous source familiar with the situation, who was not authorized to discuss it publicly.
Chopra is known to be an ally of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a frequent target of Trump, who stated that under Chopra’s leadership, the agency held “Wall Street accountable for defrauding hardworking families” and helped prevent “the de-banking of Americans nationwide, including consumers excluded from the financial system due to overdraft charges, religious organizations, and conservative individuals.”
Chopra was entitled to serve a five-year term under the law, which would have allowed him to continue as the CFPB director. However, he had previously indicated that he would resign if requested by the new president. (AP)
