NEW DELHI, Dec 6: On Friday (December 6, 2024), the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas and 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Additionally, permission was granted for the expansion of one existing Kendriya Vidyalaya.
The introduction of these new Kendriya Vidyalayas will create educational opportunities for over 82,000 students, offering them access to affordable and quality education throughout the nation.
The total estimated budget for setting up the 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas and expanding the existing one is ₹5,872.08 crore over the next eight years, starting from 2025-26.
Currently, there are 1,256 operational Kendriya Vidyalayas, including three located abroad—Moscow, Kathmandu, and Tehran—serving 13.56 lakh students, according to an official statement.
The Union Cabinet also approved the 26.463-km Rithala-Kundli corridor as part of the Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV project, which will enhance connectivity between the national capital and the surrounding regions of Haryana.
This entire corridor will consist of 21 elevated stations.
The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a press conference, Mr. Vaishnaw mentioned that the project is projected to be completed within four years from the date of its approval.
This new line will extend the currently operational Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda)-Rithala (Red Line) corridor and will improve connectivity for areas in northwestern Delhi, including Narela, Bawana, and parts of Rohini.
The total estimated cost of the project is ₹6,230 crore. (Agencies)
