NEW DELHI, Dec 19: Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a meeting on Thursday to assess the security dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir. This meeting marked the first review since the assembly elections took place in the Union territory in September and October, according to sources.
J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was present, along with senior officials from the Army, paramilitary forces, the J&K administration, intelligence agencies, and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
This meeting was Shah’s initial assessment of the security landscape in the Union territory following the recent assembly elections that resulted in a National Conference government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Since the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of the former state into two Union Territories in 2019, the law and order in Jammu and Kashmir has been under the jurisdiction of the central government.
The Union Home Minister engaged in extensive discussions regarding the security strategy projected for 2025, as reported by sources.
Incidents of terrorism have persisted sporadically in Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, seven individuals were killed in a terror attack in central Kashmir on October 20. Prior to that, there were attacks targeting outsiders working in the Valley.
Shah’s meeting is anticipated to address the recent acts of terrorism and evaluate potential measures to prevent similar attacks in the future, added the sources.
Official statistics indicate that 142 terrorists were eliminated in J&K in 2019, with approximately 45 killed thus far this year.
Additionally, fifty civilians lost their lives in 2019 in the Union Territory, while the count was reported at 14 by early November of this year.
