NEW DELHI, Dec 26: A total of 644.4 million voters participated in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, with women outpacing men in numbers, as reported by the Election Commission on Thursday.
Women voters recorded a turnout of 65.78%, slightly higher than the 65.55% of male voters, according to the EC’s findings.
The election saw 800 female candidates vying for positions, an increase from 726 in the 2019 elections, as stated by the Commission.
The EC noted, “This initiative aims to bolster public confidence, which is the foundation of India’s electoral framework.”
This data emerges in light of accusations regarding discrepancies in reported voter turnout figures during the Lok Sabha elections.
The data also includes information from the four assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim.
The EC highlighted that re-polls were conducted at 40 polling stations, which is just 0.0038% of the total 1.052 million stations, a significant decrease from 540 re-polls in 2019. (PTI)
