New Delhi, Dec 22: Amid concerns over low productivity in Parliament due to ongoing disruptions, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the need for accountability among lawmakers, suggesting that the public would ultimately hold them responsible for their responsibilities. He stressed that the success of any democracy hinges on the balance of expression and dialogue, demanding significant accountability from all parties involved.
Dhankhar, who serves as the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, stated, “Make no mistake, my reference is to legislators. The public has become accustomed to chaos in place of order, and there seems to be little outrage.” He expressed hope that public opinion would influence lawmakers to reconsider their roles: “The people will compel you to reflect, why did you come here (to Parliament)?”
While addressing the recipients of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Awards – 2024, he noted that agriculture remains fundamental to rural development.
“Without agricultural progress, the rural landscape cannot evolve, and without this evolution, the goal of a developed nation is unachievable,” he asserted.
For India to attain developed status by 2047, he mentioned the necessity of increasing people’s incomes eightfold, labeling it a “formidable challenge.” Dhankhar highlighted the importance of bolstering the village economy.
“Our most significant market is in agricultural goods, yet farming communities are minimally engaged with it. Governments must prioritize the agricultural sector to transform it into an engine for economic growth,” he stated.
The Chaudhary Charan Singh Awards – 2024 were conferred for outstanding contributions in agriculture, rural development, and journalism, with notable recipients including senior journalist Neerja Chowdhury, Rajendra Singh (revered as the “Waterman of India”), Firoz Hossain, and Pritam Singh.
Additionally, a statement from the Kisan Trust indicated that the awards ceremony took place on Saturday and was attended by Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Jayant Chaudhary.
During the event, Pradhan praised the enduring legacy of Charan Singh, noting its continued inspiration for those striving to uplift India’s farmers and rural populations.
Minister Chaudhary remarked that the existing policies of the Narendra Modi administration reflect Charan Singh’s vision, emphasizing the relevance of his insights on procurement pricing, farmer debt relief, land reform, and the elevation of landless individuals, as reported by the Kisan Trust.
