New Delhi, January 20: The parliamentary committee reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is scheduled to conduct a clause-by-clause examination of the proposed legislation on January 24 and 25. This marks a significant step towards finalizing their report, which is anticipated to be presented during the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament.
The Joint Committee of Parliament, chaired by experienced BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, has completed its consultations with stakeholders nationwide and is now seeking input from its members prior to finalizing the report.
Speaker Om Birla has granted the committee an extension until the final day of the forthcoming Budget Session, which will take place from January 31 to April 4, with a break in between.
Committee members can now suggest amendments to the proposed legislation, which will then be voted on.
Opposition members, who have strongly opposed the Bill, are likely to submit their amendments. However, for the most part, these are expected to be rejected due to the BJP and its allies holding the majority on the committee.
As the committee reviews the proposal clause-by-clause, sources indicate that a draft report will be compiled and forwarded to the Legislative Department.
Once the chairperson approves the revised Bill, it will be distributed to members for consideration before being adopted by the committee. A date for the adoption of the finalized report will be announced subsequently. (Agencies)
