New Delhi, February 14: Wholesale price inflation eased to 2.31 per cent in January, primarily due to a reduction in food item prices, notably vegetables, as per the government data released on Friday.
The inflation rate based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) was recorded at 2.37 per cent in December 2024, and a mere 0.33 per cent in January 2024.
According to the data, food item inflation decreased to 5.88 per cent in January from 8.47 per cent in December 2024. Specifically, vegetable inflation saw a notable drop to 8.35 per cent compared to 28.65 per cent in December 2024.
Inflation for potatoes remained significantly high at 74.28 per cent, while onion inflation surged to 28.33 per cent in January.
The fuel and power sector experienced a deflation of 2.78 per cent in January, an improvement from a deflation of 3.79 per cent in December. Meanwhile, inflation in manufactured goods registered at 2.51 per cent, as opposed to 2.14 per cent in December 2024.
Additionally, retail inflation data released on Wednesday indicated that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation fell to a 5-month low of 4.31 per cent in January, attributed to decreased food prices. (Agencies)
